Information stored digitally can be the subject of investigation where analysts scrutinize it for purposes specific to the investigation. In so doing, the chain of custody keeps track of the possession record which serves as the proof of integrity. While scrutinizing the evidence during investigations, an analyst can show that it has been tampered with if he/she can prove the existence of an unexplained gap in the chain of custody (Mitrakas, & Zaitch, 2009). The unexplained gap is proof of evidence tampering because it signifies the possession of the evidence by an authorized individual. Alternatively, the gap might mean undocumented handling of the evidence by an authorized individual who intended to hide their possession of the evidence.

In computer networking, a firewall is described as a device installed in a computer network to track the traffic in and out of the network. The first and most important function of a firewall is to ensure that only acceptable traffic is allowed into the network pursuant to the settings of what is deemed acceptable. This function, known as filtering, can be performed by the device on three basic levels, namely, packet filtering, circuit filtering and application-level filtering (Oppliger, 1997). All these types of filtering perform the same task of filtering traffic but at a respectively increasing level of advancement. However, a firewall has two major limitations. First, it has no capability of filtering out modem users. Consequently, a potential attacker using a modem can dial into the network and compromise it. Secondly, it lacks the capability of preventing the misuse of passwords used by users of the system.
