Cultural safety refers to the process by which health professionals within various healthcare settings decide to examine internal beliefs and practices to bolster the perception of hospital services by patients and not health providers. For an environment to be considered as culturally safe, it must be fostering on spiritual, social, emotional, and physical safety on people, by minimizing or eliminating the possible occurrence of patient’s assault, challenges, and any act of identity denials. William (1999) defined cultural safety as a state of having shared respect, meaning, value, enlightenment, and experience among individuals in the healthcare organization (p. 213). The purpose of this study is to evaluate how patient safety organizations and other hospital engagement networks can act to improve the conspicuity of cultural safety in a hospital, and roles that leadership of these institutions may play to facilitate the process of enhancing cultural safety.
Patient safety organizations such as “The Joint Commission” (TJC) have the primary mandate to ensure that the ultimate patient outcomes and treatment plans are safe. Recognizing and respecting the diversity of cultural identities among people, by offering caring options that extensively meets their needs, demands, and expectations are the baseline philosophy of culturally safe health practice. In contrast, practices whose ultimate outcomes diminishes, demeans, or disempowers the ideal identity, and patient’s well-being are referred to as culturally unsafe (Nursing Council of New Zealand 2002, p. 9). Greenhalgh et al. (2013) stipulated that these organizations should identify what makes every patient behave differently, as it is practically impossible to have the same behavioral response to a particular patient population. For this reason, acknowledging and appreciating the individual’s cultural identity is an excellent way of improving cultural safety.

For instance, leaders must be ready to implement the same behavioral standards in a very consistent manner for patients to develop trust. In other words, every individual in healthcare must be treated equally, devoid of their differences in race, language, color, gender, or sex. Also, leaders can promote a respectful relationship with everyone by ensuring that all concerns are fully acknowledged, promises adhered to, and any arising problems fixed in time Antonsen, S. (2017). Lastly, health practices must be inclusive. Most inclusive health care institutions perform recognition of microcosms in the communities that they are serving and give priorities to every view, and opinions by other stakeholders such as clinicians, patients, physicians, pharmacists, families and entire staff, as one way of accommodating everyone within the company.
In summary, cultural safety works on the principle that patients must be attended to, based on their cultural beliefs and attitudes, to improve the overall quality of the outcome. Patient safety organizations could implement the stated strategies to create culturally safe healthcare. Building on trust, respect, and inclusion also allows leaders to understand the cultural identities of everyone fully, hence could facilitate the plans to boost the overall cultural safety in their organizations.
